Arabian daysssss

Soooo two days ago we trekked down to the Arab quarter of Singapore to grab lunch and check out the sights for the afternoon. This community was full of little shops, mosques, and lots of retaurants. We stopped into one of Daniel and Ana's favorites, Alaturka.

To start we ordered some iced mint green teas and some appetizers. The first appetizer that we ordered was Borek. Borek is a cigar shaped pastry made of phyllo dough and stuffed with cheese. This was my first time trying them and they did not dissapoint!

After the borek we ordered some falafel(my favorite!), stuffed grape leaves, and a salad to split with our meal.

Then we were onto the main course:)
I ordered the lamb and eggplant kebabs for my meal and they were wonderful! They came on a steaming hot platter, similar to how fajitas are presented at a mexican restaurant. The dish was served with carrots, cauliflower, tomatoes, and slathered in a rich lamb gravy. As I've said before, I am pretty sure its near impossible to have a bad meal in Singapore.

And that wasn't all! We ended the meal with a Turkish dessert called Kanafeh.
Kanafeh is basically a cake of shredded phyllo dough cooked in a creamy sweet sauce topped with pistachios...I wish I could describe it better but it's one of those things you kind of just have to try for yourself haha

After lunch we walked around Arab street for a bit before calling it a day and heading home.

A monkey and margarita kind of day...

Day three of my Singapore adventure began much like the previous two days; woke up around 7:30, made some breakfast, watched a little tv, hit the gym, and then went out to explore more of this beautiful island. On the agenda yesterday was the MacRitchie nature trail and treetop walk. All together this trail is about 6-8 km and took us about two hours all together. The trail itself is absolutely breathtaking! It is located in the tropical rainforest and is home to many different types of plants and animals alike. One animal in particular that calls this rainforest home is the long-tailed macaque monkeys seen in the pictures below.

The monkeys are chill though and pretty much just mind their own business, unless you have food...then they're probably going to try to take it.

As you walk through the forest you pass by all different types plants, trees, and small streams that run along the sides of the trails until finally you get to the famous tree walk.

The view from the bridge is unlike anything you have ever seen (even for someone like me who is deathly afraid of heights). After you finish crossing the bridge you are met by another trail and quite a lot of stairs that eventually bring you back to where you started your hike. All in all it was definitely a great way to spend such a beautiful day outside.
After our hike we were all pretty hungry and ready to relax and grab a cold drink somewhere. We made our way down to Holland Village, which is a big hot spot for the ex-pat community of Singapore. We grabbed some beers and sandwiches for lunch and then took the bus back home where we all crashed and took a much needed nap before figuring out our plans for the evening.

After napping we hung around the house for a bit before heading out for Mexican food with some of Ana and Daniel's friends. Dinner consisted of chips, salsa, guacamole, mango ceviche, tacos, churros, and AMAZING margaritas. When dinner was finished we walked around Clarke
Quayruns before we called it a night and grabbed a cab back home. Once again, an amazing day on this wonderful island...

Little India and China Town

So yesterday morning started out great! After waking up from a fabulous night of sleep my cousin made us some eggs for breakfast with fresh french bread from a bakery down the street along with some of the most delicious dragon-fruit I have ever had. After breakfast I hit the gym for a little bit and after that we were off on our way to Little India.

The restaurant that we went to in Little India was awesome! We started off our meals with some drinks, I got a refreshing sweetened lime juice and Daniel and Ana both had mango lassis that were delicious. We then ordered some vegetable samosas and garlic naan to start. The first time I ever had Indian food was during a trip to Tanzania when I was 18 and since then no Indian food has ever come close to being as good as what I had there, but I am happy to announce that today that was not the case. The vegetable samosas came right out of the fryer cooked to golden, flaky perfection and the naan was hot and covered in garlic and butter, both equally spectacular.I know, this sounds amazing right? My mouth is still watering as I am typing this, and this was just our appetizers!

For lunch I ordered the fish tikka which was fish marinated in spices, lime, and yoghurt and then cooked in an extremely hot oven and Daniel had the butter chicken:)

So basically lunch was fabulous haha There truly is nothing better than traveling with people who enjoy the same things as you do. One thing that is always a priority for me during my travel adventures is the food. What, where, and when I am going to eat are thoughts that are constantly running through my head. I truly believe you get much more out of your travels by completely immersing yourself in the culture and food definitely plays a huge part in that for me. Thankfully my cousin and his wife are on the same page as me about food:) Now I know I have only been in Singapore for two days but I am convinced it is impossible to eat a bad meal here.

After lunch we continued to walk around and shop for a bit. I fully commited to being as touristy as possible and bought myself a selfie stick from one of the markets. Now...in the states if I saw a tourist with one of these sticks
I would make fun of them and probably laugh in their face but here its very different, locals and tourists alike enjoy the convenience of their selfie sticks. Seriously everywhere you go you are bound to see someone with a selfie stick. Don't knock it til you try it.

Exhibit A.

My selfie stick:)

Picture taken with my selfie stick:)
We then proceeded to walk around Tekka markket for a bit and get some fruits and veggies for the week. I also had the honor of meeting Ana and Daniel's vegetable man who seriously had everything from kale to eggplant to mutant sized brussel sprouts (which we had for dinner and were awesome!)

So after our long day of food, shopping, and selfies we stopped by a few temples in China town before calling it a day.

Escalators, Merlions, and hawkers, oh my!

So day one in Singapore, we started out our morning with a walk down Orchard road which is basically the Rodeo Drive of Singapore. Seriously they had it all from Crate and Barrel to H&M to Lululemon. This country literally has anything you would ever possibly need or want, and then some.
So from Orchard we proceed into one of the indoor shopping malls that has one of the worlds tallest outdoor escalators, which I like to call the escalators of doom. They are a set of very steep escalators that run on the side of this building all the way up to the 11th floor but we didn't go all the way up due to my impending panic attacks haha

This was the start of our trek, I wish I had gotten more pictures on the way up but I was too busy holding on for dear life to worry about checking out the scenery.
So after shopping around for a bit we went to see the Merlion!

Now, a Merlion is exactly what you think it would be, half mermaid half lion.
It became the symbol of Singapore when during the 11th century Singapore was rediscovered by Prince Sang Nala Utama. When the prince first landed on the island he spotted a mythical beast which he later found out was a lion. He then decided to name the island "Singapura" which in sanskrit means Lion City. The fishtail on the Merlion symbolizes Singapores humble beginnig as a fishing village.

We then went to a Hawker Centre for lunch where I had a tradition Singaporean meal of Latska. Its a noodle dish in a coconut milk and curry broth with all different kinds of fish in it. It was definitely a good choice for my first meal in Singapore!

After lunch we went to the museum where they had a Leonardo Da Vinci interactive exhibit that was simply amazing!

After our long day of sightseeing we met up with some of my cousins friends for some drinks and dinner before heading back home and calling it a night. all in all it was definitely a perfect first day in this fabulous country.

The top notch cuisine that is airline food...

I am going to be completely honest here and confess my hidden love obsession with airline food....
Let me first just clarify that by airline food I am not referring to the ridiculously small bags of pretzels and the occasional pack of biscoff cookies (although those are delicious). No, I am talking about the amazing meals they give you to keep you happy and fed during torturous 20 plus hour flights that take you halfway across the world.
This trip I flew Emirates airline from New York JFK to Dubai and then from Dubai to Singapore. What you are fed on your flight really depends on your airline and where you are flying to. So putting it nicely, if you are not a fan of the magical aroma that is curry I would not recommend flying emirates airline. Thankfully I thoroughly enjoy Indian cuisine so this flight was a treat!

Our trip started at eleven oclock on January 30 with a 12 hour flight from New York to Dubai. They announced that dinner service would be about an hour into our flight and then the flight attendants proceeded to go around the cabin and hand out menus...menus? Now, I've been fed on flights before but never had I had the choice to choose between Lamb Biryani and Chana Masala for dinner on a plane! I obviously went with the lamb:) It came with an appetizer of lentil and feta salad, crackers with a garlic cheese spread, lamb, rice, a roll, and then for dessert a blueberry crumble cake. Needless to say, everything was absolutely delicious and worth every penny of this ridiculously expensive flight haha AND this is just the food they served in economy, I can't even imagine wha they have going on up in first class....

Now I'm not going to go into detail about every meal they served on each of my flights but between two breakfasts and two dinners they were all equally as amazing as the last and definitely made the long flight a little more bearable knowing that at least I had the food to look forward too every five hours or so:)
So yeah, thats my rant about airline food...Bon appetit!

Sunday Funday in the city

We started our day off today by heading into the city around 12:30 to meet up with family for lunch at Forcella on Park Ave.
The meal began with a round of mimosas, bloody Mary's, pellegrino, and some Shirley temples for the kids. We then moved on to appetizers which included bruschetta, potato croquettes, and two orders of burrata (fresh mozzarella stuffed with creamy cheese) ;one served with prosciutto and the other with an delicious balsamic glaze. After polishing off our apps and another round of drinks everyone was ready to order their main courses, as if we weren't already stuffed from round one.
,
There were so many options when it came to lunch, this restaurant had everything from homemade pizzas to a fresh vegetarian kale burger with fries. Me and my cousin decided to split two things and decided on the gnocchi alla Sorrentino and a margherita pizza with fresh buffalo mozzarella. The pizza was to die for and the gnocchi came in a creamy marinara sauce topped
with thick slices of mozzarella and sprigs of basil that was equally amazing
Family, friends, and great food... Can't ask for much more!
